TOEFL tips

One tip for every task in the 2026 TOEFL, then a four-week plan. Try each task free as you go.

Complete the Words

Fill in the missing letters of words in a short paragraph.

Tip: Read the whole sentence before you type. The words around the gap tell you the form: a plural, a past tense, an adverb.

Read in Daily Life

Short everyday texts such as notices, emails and posts.

Tip: Ask who wrote it and why before you read the questions. Most questions test the purpose or one key detail.

Read an Academic Passage

Tip: Separate the main claim from the examples. A question about the writer's point is rarely answered by one example.

A four-week TOEFL plan

About an hour a day. Move faster on the sections that are already strong.

Week 1

Learn the test

  • Take the free practice test
  • Try one set of every task type
  • Start the free lesson on Complete the Words

Week 2

Reading and Listening

  • One Reading set and one Listening set a day
  • Sort every miss by task type
  • Re-read the passage before checking why an answer was wrong

Week 3

Writing and Speaking

  • An email or a discussion post every day
  • Record interview answers and play them back
  • Ten Build a Sentence items a day

Week 4

Full timing

  • Timed sections on the real clocks
  • Run the test-day check
  • Light review only the day before

Three rules that cost marks

  • Answer something in every section. A skipped section means no scores at all.
  • Reading and Listening adapt to your answers, so take the same care from the first question to the last.
  • Check your room, microphone and ID before a home test. Run the test-day check first.

Questions

How long does it take to prepare for the TOEFL?

It depends on the gap between your level now and the score you need. Four focused weeks suit someone within about half a band of their target; a bigger gap needs longer. Take the free practice test first to see where you stand.

What is the best way to prepare for the TOEFL?

Learn what each task asks, practice it with feedback, then practice under time. Review every miss by task type so you fix patterns, not single questions.

Can I take notes in the TOEFL?

Yes. Notes are allowed, and in Listening they help most with details that change during a conversation or talk.

What happens if I skip a whole section?

ETS does not score the test at all unless you answer at least one Reading question, one Listening question, one Writing task and one Speaking task.

Can I retake the TOEFL if it goes badly?

Yes, as often as you like, but not more than once in any 3-day period.
